Obama to host top lawmakers as default looms
President Barack Obama will host Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Republican House Speaker John Boehner at the White House at 3 p.m. ET Monday amid an 11th-hour push to avoid a potentially devastating U.S. debt default and seemingly stalled talks on reopening the government.
Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and Vice President Joe Biden will also take part in the meeting, the White House announced.
"With only a few days until the government runs out of borrowing authority, the president will make clear the need for Congress to act to pay our bills, and reopen the government," a White House official told reporters on condition of anonymity.
