The machine tool industry has stabilized and rebounded, with a promising future ahead
Current situation and data support
At present, the machine tool industry shows a clear trend of stabilization and recovery. Data released by the China Machine Tool Builders' Association shows that from January to September 2025, the entire industry achieved operating revenue of 764.7 billion yuan, representing a year-on-year growth of 1.6%. The total profit reached 24.7 billion yuan, a significant year-on-year increase of 28.0%, ending the downward trend since the first half of 2023 and returning to the growth range.
Reasons for the recovery
Policy support
Since 2025, the policy support for industrial mother machines at the national level has been unprecedented, forming a complete policy system from top-level design to implementation. For instance, the "Work Plan for Stabilizing Growth in the Machinery Industry (2025-2026)" jointly issued by six departments emphasizes the implementation of tax preferential policies, the reduction of comprehensive costs for enterprises, and the increase of financial support. It also encourages equipment enterprises to carry out technological innovation and equipment renewal, providing a strong policy guarantee for the recovery of the machine tool industry.
Market demand-driven
As China intensifies its efforts to cultivate emerging and future industries, the safe and healthy development of commercial aerospace, low-altitude economy, deep-sea technology and other fields has continuously driven the demand for high-end machine tools. Meanwhile, the rapid development of emerging fields such as new energy vehicles, aerospace, artificial intelligence, and new materials has continuously driven up the demand for high-end machine tools and tools.
Product structure upgrading and technological innovation
Under the wave of intelligent manufacturing, the machine tool industry is undergoing a profound transformation from digitalization to intelligence. From January to September, the significant improvement in industry benefits was mainly driven by the continuous upgrading of the product structure. China's machine tool enterprises have been constantly breaking through core technologies, and the level of autonomy of high-end products has significantly improved.
Export performance
China's machine tool industry has been actively optimizing its export market layout, forming a diversified market pattern. Metalworking machine tools, as a core category for import and export, have performed particularly outstandingly. Imports have turned from decline to increase, the growth rate of exports has continued to expand, and the trade surplus has further widened, marking that China's comparative advantage in the global market for metalworking machine tools is becoming increasingly prominent. In terms of exports, benefiting from the growth in equipment demand brought about by local industrial transfer, exports to Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam have continued to grow rapidly. The growth rate of exports to Russia and India has expanded, and emerging markets have become new engines for export growth. For traditional markets such as Europe, America and Japan, steady breakthroughs have been achieved through high-end products, forming an export pattern of "expanding volume in emerging markets and improving quality in developed markets".
Challenges and Prospects
Although the industry has stabilized and rebounded, the current development of the machine tool industry still faces many challenges. In terms of the external environment, the international political and economic situation is complex and severe. The growth momentum of the world economy and international trade is insufficient. Trade protectionism has intensified. Machine tool products have become the target of international camp games. The US policy of interest rate cuts and tax hikes has brought uncertainties to exports. The strengthening of export control policies for dual-use items may also have a certain impact on exports. Moreover, in the long run, the fundamental trend of the industry's long-term positive outlook has not changed, and the development opportunities it faces are unprecedented.
